Dear chess.com readers, in our previous article on sports training planning (Click here to read) we comment on the generalities that sports training should respond to in high-competition athletes.

It is vital that both the coach and the athletes are convinced of the elements that make up the training, we can find within the generalities to which the preparation obeys the following:

Perfection: Concrete results

Speed: Results obtained when executing the perfected actions.

Spontaneity: Corresponds to the practical execution of developed patterns, fluidly every day needing less effort and energy expenditures.

Resistance: This is obtained by successive execution of the above-mentioned elements with the support of the above elements develops a fundamental element of the personality of a chess player. Resistance to analysis and calculation can be controlled by two components, intensity and quantity (volume).


The objective: This element is the one that will indicate the contents and dimensions of work.

The activity: It is the scheduled planning and its methods of practice.

Results control: It is the evaluation of the tasks performed.

Evaluation: Refers to the comparison of the initial results proposed with those obtained after the activity.


General conclusions of the athlete and coach: Arises from the reflections to optimize the results in future opportunities.

Among the methods that control the journalization of chess training we can find the following:

Method of conviction: The athlete and his/her trainer should be aware of the aspiration levels. In this period it is necessary to observe the psychological qualities and traits of the athlete, through the observance of his games and the application of various psychological tests, however strange the chess activity seems is a discipline that obeys imminent psychological and volitive factors.

Method of imposition: In this process the coach can impose on the athlete considerations that he sees relevant, even reaching to sanction the student critically, as long as the pedagogical and didactic values are respected. This would serve as an encouragement in the commitment of the teaching-learning process.

Method of graduation of difficulties and burdens: Being chess a mental sport, this has a strong involvement of morphological and functional factors. Therefore the loads must be raised gradually, through a systematic context, in order to cyclically develop the endurance of athletes.

Repetition method: This method is aimed at increasing the speed, spontaneity and endurance of athletes, so that they can react naturally to similar positions, let us remember that training is any action oriented to the development of skills and skills of an athlete.

Implementation method: Competences, whether preparatory or fundamental. Results within the achievement or not of the objectives can resize the course that carries the training. Psychological values play an essential role in especially.
