Castle Chess Portsmouth Congress: Round 1

Feb 23, 2011, 4:45 AM |

Last weekend, I entered the third chess tournament of my life (which is also the third participation in the Major section of my life). The grading category for the section I played was U160 ECF (i.e. roughly 1930 FIDE, or 1880 USCF). My grade is 157, so I toyed with the idea of playing in the Open instead... but decided I didn't want to get crushed on that particular weekend. The tournament consists of six rounds (swiss of course) and I intend to blog each of them in turn. So without further ado, let's take a look at my first round! (I play black.)

I can't help but shake off the feeling I was sitting on a strong advantage throughout most of that game. However, I took too much time trying to find the correct moves (which I missed anyway) and as such risked being defeated by the clock! So, I kick off the tournament with a score of 0.5/1. Join me tomorrow as we venture into Round 2, and my first game of the tournament as white!
