GM Hikaru Nakamura is renowned for his dynamic and aggressive style and his fast tactical eye. These days his speed of calculation has even made him an internet meme more than a few times.

In one of his most famous wins, Nakamura used only a few minutes to conclude a brilliant king hunt against GM Michal Krasenkow.

Top 10 Games of the 2000s

The opening is initially not particularly eventful, but as GM Krasenkow tries to open to his advantage, Nakamura finds nice ways to create tactical pressure and with 18...Qb6!, he proffers a very tempting line. Krasenkow evidently doesn't see the flaw and enters the line only to be stunned by Nakamura's 21st move. It's rare for a grandmaster to literally not see a move coming, but I suspect such was the case here.

Still Krasenkow might have hoped that this king hunt would end simply in perpetual, but Nakamura found a mating net that could not be evaded.

Lessons:

  • Always consider all forcing moves: checks and captures.
  • Cover the flight squares when hunting kings.
