In diagram below, with White to play, a quick count shows that the material situation is exactly equal. However, black has a pair of doubled pawns on c7 and c6. It may later be possible to affect an exchange so that they can be undoubled but it is not easy to achieve.Meanwhile, on the other side of the board, four white pawns face three pieces black pawns. There is serious denger that, after three pawn have been exchanged, white may be left with one passed pawns that could even promote to a queen one day. This is all very long-term strategy but gives some idea of the problems that can accrue from doubled pawns.
