The fact that Geller missed the tactic indicates how hard it is to see, but f7 is pinned tactically - meaning it can't be moved without allowing an atack.  Bronstein, however, realized that if f7 wasn't there - or if f7 were to move - he could simply play:  Rxg7, followed by Ng6 mate.
