Well were do you begin the newcomers to the division had made some new recruits to their team and were now serious title challengers if not favourites, they opted not to bring their already formidable line up to the bottom of the table (us) instead having made futher recruits had the Arkells in their team. So what we were hoping to get a draw out of reallistically turned into avoid 5-0 whitewash.

To my surprized no one was really walking around or looking at other games , all I could go by from where I was sat were the red faces of Gary and Steve suggested they were really struggling on 4 and 5 ,Glyn was doing ok and Adrian well was been lead down path that so many have been down, a grind that results in a Keith Arkell win.

Well 9:30 and all the games were still going normally in such a one sided match the pins all fall pretty quickly but it appeared we were holding our own.

Indeed it was about 10 and it was Gary to fall first but there was to be no collapse as the other games all continued. I glanced at Adrians and although only a pawn down the writing was on the wall, then checked on Glyn's not only had he got a better posistion but he had snaffled a piece too, still unaware what was going on with Steve. I by now was starting to crumble. Next thing I remember happeing was Steve's,Glyns and Adrians games all finished rapidly together and I was the only remaining game ,Steve had drawn ,Glyn won and Adrian lost. Match score 2.5-1.5 but with my opponent virtually out of time and having already over looked a couple of winning moves ,I had nothing to lose and everything to gain playing on, as his clock went below 30 seconds I suddenly had the thought of offer the draw , such a strange thing to do in the match posistion luckily I kept my mouth shut and played a pawn move that under time pressure was easy to overlook the point of and indeed he did! now a rook up and my opponent having about 20 seconds on the clock,I could feel the tension and glee that we may grab something from the match, however  I was getting distracted by both the speed of moves been made and recording the moves,I subconciously slowed myself down and as Gary saw that 70 moves were approaching handed me another score sheet , I said I won't need that Im not recording any more. I'd entered the last 5 minutes and my opponent had about 4 seconds ,this was over I was ready to swap to rapidplay mode even though there was still time for a late trap from my opponent I side stepped and watched his clock start flashing .Unbelievable 2.5-2.5

I wasn't entirely happy at winning it on time ,I felt I was winning in the game to a point until I became super passive my opponent agreed and was both very gracious in defeat and complimentry about the game, but as he said a win is a win and for me it has been a while coming, but more importantly its the first point for the team.

Shame  for Adrian but I did quite enjoy watching a masterclass in rook and pawn ending.
