Well after most of the players competed in the local Shropshire chess congress it was back to the league, which finds us second from bottom of the table, playing one of the superpowers of the league Telepost, now joined by some Churchstretton players makes an already strong team very strong and now included my knightmare opponent. Whoelse would I be playing on the night the only person I can't seem to beat meant the rest would have to step up tonight.
As it was with me and Adrian hugely out graded it would be down to the bottom boards on paper to lead the fight.
After afew moves it just happened me and our opponents board one looked at each other posistion to see we were facing the same opponenting and Nigel quickly quipped I should have played the same as you , not quite he is much higher rated and was always going down theory oppose to my lets wing it approach. It was all going ok on our boards a glanceover at board 3 saw an avalanche of pieces flying at Glyn and it was obvious he was in for a rough night. Well for a change there was little looking around by myself but I still found myself dropping my Queen on the wrong square ,which meant I lost my bishop pair and would lead to knights v bishops a prospect I thought was already over but for the fact Trevor is a careful player and gave me oppurtunity to get some counter play. Adrian on one had now gone a pawn up against Nigel much to his disgust and a draw would be all Adrian would be letting him get at best. Still Glyn was getting battered, Phil remarking im playing like you. Unfortunately Gary on 5 had lost which meant fingers crossed at very least Steve would win. My posistion was quickly improving although I was probing for an opening I felt it would happen and finally I would beat Trevor .Adrian was continuing his game knowing he was never going to lose it. Then came the terrible outcome Steve too had lost with Glyn getting battered seemed like I was the only one that could win. A rush of blood from myself instantly knowing Trevor had blundered my mind went to mush and with it my advantage. Even the finally posistion was playable as Trevor with about 3 minutes and myself nearly 40 but I was relieved not to have lost it, so offered the draw. As we were analysing Adrian had won his drawn game and Phil and Glyn agreed a draw so we lost the match. As the night went on my draw started to annoy me and I realized I should have won but I could not have predicted other results and although it will take a while to get this game out of my head, I must take positives the fact I had Trevor on the rack for once and have landed a blow if not a knock out.
