Wellington V Priorslee Lions

Well with the Lions rooted to the bottom of the table this was an absolute must win game against Wellington, for me the favourites to get relegated, I say that only because I believe of all the teams in the Shropshire chess league they are the least likely to get there best team out every match.

Upon arrival we were met with this very scenario both there regular board 2 and 4 missing, on paper what could have been a dangerous affair should have been a little easier now. My opponent was running late but their Captain Toby was very adamant to start clocks on time so that gave me some time to watch boards 1 and 3 . Adrian was very quickly into a set up he plays all the time Toby must have known it quite well as they were moving quite quickly but this could only suit Adrian. Glyn on board 3 had me baffled very early on playing some weird set up where his opponent gave him a pawn but at no point wanted to take it back, so as moves were being played I was just getting more and more confused as to the game plan for either player, even when I thought I knew what was going on they would make a threat then not follow through. When my opponent arrived he was quickly down to action, only knowing the opening from rapidplay it was very clear I had walked myself straight into a terrible position and I thought although last to start first to finish as I was getting absolutely battered. As it was there was a mismatch on board 5 between a lowly rated player and Gary recent winner of his section at Scarborough and Gary without any effort at all had quickly wrapped up his game, Steve on 4 was playing an exciting London system yawn, yawn, yawn against Colin Mace who also plays it, and seemingly knew it a little better as he had certainly gained a slight advantage, Adrian on 1 was very comfortable against Toby , after Toby had opted to open lines up for Adrian to take full advantage of , Glyn was still playing weird and although he was better was clearly not himself as he was opting to be defensive instead of his more offensive style. Although I was still under pressure I had come up with an idea, knowing if things had carried on the way they were going I was obviously going to lose, so I rolled the dice and suddenly who  knew what was going on in my game at this point, I had no idea with so many complications I just thought if Tiago wins it fairplay to him  , Glyn was next to finish when he surprized me by offering a draw his opponent couldn't say yes quick enough, but a sudden check on the other boards saw Steve in real trouble so maybe the draw offer was premature. Amazingly it was myself next to finish as Tiago had started making mistakes and blundered a piece although not fatal in this crazy game it was certainly not helpful and I managed to convert the advantage. Toby was busted he had one last attempt and that was to look for perpetual check but this was doomed to fail and he through the towel in before he went 2 rooks down, with the match score a healthy 3.5-0.5 we all expected Steve to just offer a draw as somehow he had gained a pawn but was now losing badly on time, but in one of the most bizarre blitz finishes Ive seen ,neither player actually wanted to move a piece , Steve swindled 2 pieces and ate all of Colin's time resulting in a very good 4.5-0.5 scoreline.
