Resigning?

If you are near the end of a game, and there is no possible way to win, (for example: if you have a couple of pawns and a king, and your opponent has a queen, pawns and lets say a knight) then is it disrespectful to resign, and save the opponent the tediousness of putting you in check every move while slowley picking off your pawns. Or is it proper chess manners to play through the end until your opponent has captured your king? I'm curious on others thoughts?
