The talented Dutch GM Anish Giri leads the Tata Steel Tournament after 9 rounds. The GM of Russian origin accumulates 6.5 points, undefeated character (with 4 wins and 5 draws) and is emerging as a serious candidate to succeed in the first big tournament of the year, followed by World Champion Magnus Carlsen tied with GM Shakriyar Mamedyarov with 6 points. A tenacious battle is expected in the last 4 rounds of the event. Challenger Group are tied atop the Hindu GM Vidit and his Ukrainian colleague Anton Korobov, with 6.5 out of 9.
