The following link from the National Geographic magazine has captured the melancholy which exists in North Dakota. My brother Tony’s photos do so as well. Some readers of Charles Bowden’s article “The Emptied Prairie” have taken umbrage over how bleak a picture he painted of the state of North Dakota. Most notably the governor of North Dakota wrote an article in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune in protest. Since my ancestors on my Mom’s side started up in ND, it has a special place in my heart. A friend of ours who has done a lot of research about his German from Russia relatives says, “There’s a bit of North Dakota in all of us.” I agree.
