Sayings about Education from Kyrgyzstan

NASA photo“Getting education is like digging a well with a needle.” Kyrgyz proverb which probably means learning is a never ending pursuit throughout life but not impossible.  From Confucian Analects there is the saying:  “Learning without thought is a labor lost, thought without learning is perilous.”

Education is much more than merely thinking as Alexandre Dumas so cynically put it:  “How is that little children are so intelligent and men so stupid? It must be education that does it.”  Learning has more to do with DOING as Johann Wolgang von Goethe quotes:  “Knowing is not enough; we must apply.  Willing is not enough, we must do.”  Also the British historian Edward Gibbon once said that those who succeed in DOING are those who are best equipped:  “The winds and the waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators.”

In the case of  being skillful with languages, one 22 year old single man from Naryn, Kyrgyzstan, wrote the following as being a Kyrgyz proverb, it is actually classic Karl Marx: “A foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life.”  Another 20 year old single male from Karakol, Kyrgyzstan said that philosophers opine that “purpose” is half of the affair.  Benjamin Disraeli is quoted as saying “Upon the education of the people of this country, the fate of this country depends.”
