The Devil Went Down to Richmond...He was lookin for a game of chess to steal
Paul Morphy, a man that needs no introduction (not on THIS website anyway!) was visiting a preacher's home in Richmond. The preacher lead Morphy into the library...where the good reverend had hung a copy of a famous painting by Moritz Retzsch.
The picture shows a young boy playing chess (and getting his a$$ whipped!) with the Devil. And As usual...anybody who gambles with the D Man always pays with his very Soul!!
The story goes that Morphy took a look at the boy's horrible position in the painting, and after studying it several minutes, turned to the preacher and said "I can win that game for the boy!"'
NO WAY!! thought the unbelieving preach as he quickly grabbed his board and set up the exact position as in the painting.
Morphy sat down and in a few quick moves checkmated Old Scratch!
No joke...This event really happened and is chronicled in the American Chess Magazine - 1898.
But did the Devil get his revenge?
Morphy died a premature death at age 47...in a bizarre (suspicious) bathtub incident in New Orleans.
Albert Einstein once said that "God doesn't play dice". But apparently the Devil DOES play chess...and be careful...HE IS A VERY BAD LOSER!!!!!
