Over the weekend I played in the January Thaw, the first major tournament of the new year. Though I've won the event before, this year saw some twists and turns I hadn't expected. In the first round, for example, my opponent played very creatively and aggressively, almost managing to trap my king until I barely found a way out of danger and won. What surprised me is that the gentleman just recently got involved in serious competitive chess, a foreshadowing of the doom awaiting me in Round 2.
