January Thaw 2017 - Round 4
Round 4 was a barn-burner against Daniel Mattson, whom I had played once before and is an extremely talented player on a quest to increase his rating. I was having a good game when, as usual, I made a flashy and foolhardy move after convincing myself it would work. It didn't, and it put me down a piece. Desperate to avoid another loss as in Round 2, I resolved to keep my queen on the board and create threats anywhere I could. The game went down to under 1 minute per person, and I somehow managed to get the piece back, gain a pawn advantage, trade queens, and win.
I felt sorry for Daniel because he played an amazing game and likely should have won it. But I've been on the receiving end of heartbreak more than a few times in my life, and I'm sure Daniel will bounce back from this stronger than ever.
My notation is incomplete because I stopped recording at the 5-minute mark. Daniel recorded more than I did and has sent me his notes, which got us to the point where I traded the queens off the board and forced a favorable endgame.
