Montana State Championship - Round 1 (Gentlemen's Draw)

I went into this year's closed competition for the Montana State Championship as the second seed and with high hopes. Though I did not win, I handed the current champion his only loss in a fascinating endgame in Round 3, and I sustained only one loss myself. What held me back was drawing. In this first game against Romi Carpenter, we agreed to an early draw because things were about to get complicated and we preferred to save our strength for total combat in later games (Romi in particular wanted to watch the Texas Longhorns game). The strategy backfired because I got shellacked in Round 2. The best laid plans and all that . . .
