The power of the pawns!

Pawns can become a powerful ressource in a chess fight. But only if you are able to use them!

In our first example black had given an exchange ( rook for a bishop) and had got three connected passed pawns on queenside as compensation.

But he wasn`t able to mobilize them. So the power of three connected pawns remained unused.

Instead of this  white`s h-pawn became decisive:


In our second example young Carlsen had given also an exchange (rook for a knight) . But he was able to use the power of his center pawns. This time the h-pawn of white didn`t help:
