I remember reading in a Pandolfini book some time ago that women were not so common as Grand Masters because to be a Grand Master you had to take yourself out of life for long periods of time and be completely immersed in or consumed by the game.  I do not remember the book and if anyone can direct me to the source of this idea, I would be grateful.  It raises the question in my mind of the difference between a Master and a Grand Master and the importance of owning such titles.
