Mark 3:27

"No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house."

One of the primary emphases in Mark's Gospel is Jesus' everriding concern to defeat Satan and his demonic powers; in 3:27, this is phrased as "binding the strog man" (i.e., Satan) and "spoiling his house" (i.e., setting liberty those who are enslaved of Satan). Thiw power over Satan is specially evident in the casting out of demons (Gk. daimonion) or evil spirits.

  • DEMONS.

1.) The New Testament frequently to those who are suffering from Satan's opppresion or influence because of the indwelling of an evil spirit, and to Jesus' conflict with demons.

2.) Demons are spirit beings who have personality and intelligence. As members of Satan's kingdom and enemies of God and humans (Matthew 12:43-45), they are evil, malicious and under Satan's authority.

3.) Demons are the power behind idol gods, so that the worship of false gods is essentially the worship of demons.

1 Corinthians 10:20

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

4.) The New Testament presents the world as estranged from God and seized by Satan. Demons are the rulers of this age, and Christians must wage continual warfare with them.

Ephesians 6:12

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

5.) Demons can, and often do, dwell in the bodies of unbelievers and use their voices to talk. They enslave such individuals and influence them toward evil, immorality and destruction

6.) Demons can cause physical illness in the human body, although not all sickness and disease are the result of evil spirits.

7.) Those involved in spiritism and magic (i.e., sorcery) are dwelling with evil spirits; this practice can easily lead to demonic bondage.

Acts 13:8-10 (NIV)

But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith.  Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 1“You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?

8.) Evil spirits will be easily active in the last days of this age, promoting the occult, immorality, violence and cruelty; they will assault the Word of God and sound doctrine. The ultimate occurence of demonic activitu will be in the antichrist and his followers.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15  (NIV)

And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

  • JESUS and demons.

1.) In His miracles, Jesus often attacks the power os Satan and the demonic. One os His clearly purposes in coming to the earth was to bind Satan and set at liberty those enslaved by him.

2.) Jesus' binding of Satan, accomplished in part through His casting out of demons and more completely in His death and resurrection.

John 12:31

Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

3.) Hell (Gk. Gehenna), the place of torment, has been prepared by our Lord for the devil and his demons.

Matthew 25:41  (NIV)

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matthew 8:29

“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

  • BELIEVERS and demons.

1.) The Scriptures teach that no true believer who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, can be demon possessed; that is, the Spirit and demons can never dwell in the same body. Demons may, however, influence the thoughts, emotions and actions of Christians who fail to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 6:15-16 (NIV)

What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

   “I will live with them

   and walk among them,

and I will be their God,

and they will be my people.”

2.) Jesus promised true believers authority over the power of Satan and his cohorts. As we confront them, we must break the power they want to exert over us and others by waging intense spiritual warfare through the power of Holy Spirit. In this way we can be set free from the powers of darkness.

3.) According to the parable in Mark 3:27, spiritual conflict against Satan involves three separate aspects:

a. declaring war against Satan according to the purpose of God.

b. entering Satans house (any place where he has a stronghold), attacking and overpowering him by prayer and proclamation of the Word, and destroying his weapons of demonic deception and temptation.

c. carrying off his possessions, i.e., delivering those who have been held captive by Satan's power and giving them over to God so that they may receive forgiveness and sanctification by faith in Christ. (Acts 26:17-18)

4.) The following are the individual stpes we must use in this process:

a. Recognize that we are not in a conflict against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces and powers of evil. (Ephesians 6:12)

b. Live a life before God, fervently committed to his truth and righteousness.

c. Have faith that Satan's power can be broken in any specific area of his domain. And realize that the believer has powerful spiritual weapons which God has given for the destruction of Satan's strongholds. (Ephesians 6:10-17)

d. Proclaim the Gospoel of the Kingdom in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

e. Challenge Satan and his power directly by believing in Jesus' Name, bu usingthe Word of God, by praying in the Spirit, by fasting and by casting out demons.

f. Pray especially for the Holy Spirit to produce conviction within the lost concerning sin, righteousness, and the coming judgment.
