Hi everyone!

If you live in the UK then please consider asking your MP to put their name towards an Early Day Motion (for Chess) in Parliament!

Yasmin Qureshi MP has put forward an EDM (Early Day Motion) in parliament entitled "Chess". This is off the back of an appearance made on Breakfast TV by Chess In Schools ( which is an organisation administered by the affable and energetic Sabrina Chevannes and chaired by IM Malcolm Pein.

Here is an excerpt from Malcolm's email which landed in my "inbox"!

The strength of an EDM is measured by the number of MPs who sign it so please write to your MP and ask them to do so. MPs usually react positively to such requests. You can find out who your MP is by entering your postcode here and you can write to your MP via this website.

Your own words are best but you can use this text:  As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to sign EDM 2158 on Chess. As a teacher / chess coach / parent / chess player I am convinced of the benefits of introducing the game of chess to children at a young age.

The EDM is as follows:

That this House recognises the positive social and intellectual benefits for all children across the social spectrum of learning chess at a young age and the relatively low costs of teaching it in schools; notes that while chess currently receives no financial support from the UK government, many European countries including Sweden and France financially support chess in schools; further notes that the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth would welcome UK support for the Chess in Schools project being developed by the ECU and the Kasparov Chess Foundation; welcomes the work of the UK based charity Chess in Schools and Communities which teaches chess to primary school children from less affluent backgrounds; and calls on the government to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to learn chess at primary school within existing resources.

You can see the EDM here

and  who has signed here:

That's the information I was provided with so I contact my own MP right away. I am still awaiting a response from Brian Binley MP although it's only been a few days since I wrote him and I am sure he is a very busy man ;-)

The process took me around 5 minutes so this HAS to be worth five minutes of your time and perhaps another five minutes of your time to email everyone else in your address book, surely?!
