Mostly, I LOVE chess!!

The team result was really the most important thing last night. Unfortunately, we only managed a 2-2 draw away to Kenilworth.

Having finished my game (a win!) the match was poised at 1-1 with two games still to finish. Looking at both positions, we were worse and I was dreading my first defeat as Daventry A "captain". Andy Foulds came out soon afterwards, apologetically having lost from what he felt was a position he could draw. I was in the bar (where else!) analysing my game with my opponent, Rod Webb.

Not too long later, a smiling and fist pumping Kevin Bowman emerged. High fives ensued. Somehow he had won his game despite being a piece down. For once, Kevin had got HIS opponent into time trouble (Kev is renowned at our club for his time keeping!). I don't have copies of the other games but suffice to say, Kevin had saved the team from defeat!

On board 3, Rob had managed to lose his fianchettoe'd bishop (again..... grrr... how many times?!!?!?!?) and lost fairly quickly - althoguh he insists that he had to give the Bishop up. He somehow managed to lose a Rook in the process of exchanging his vitally important bishop. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a chess player! Rob's recent form, to be fair, has been good although over the season he has not quite been as consistent as the rest of the team in terms of grinding out results but he'll come good in our semi final cup game next week, when he will be promoted to board 2!

Anyway, we came away with a draw, so here's the score card and the updated league table:

So although we remain top of the league, Solihull have a couple of games in hand. We have to hope that they slip up. Solihull are coming to us at the end of the season (a rearranged fixture) and there might be the possibility that this will be a title decider. First things first though, cup semi final next week and the other league matches where we HAVE to get results. It's really great to be "in the mix" at the business end of the season though!

Here is my win from last nights' match. No analysis yet (no time!) but I will be looking through this as I feel black should have had the better of the opening. However, I was pleased with my game after move 11 where I think I played well enough to keep Rod tied up. He eventually lost on time but we both agreed in the analysis afterwards that I stood better after his 12th move. From this point on, Rod managed to get into some severe time trouble and it was the time trouble and not Rod's poor play that led to me winning some material towards the end of the game.
