The King is the most important piece in a game of chess. After all, if your King is threatened in such a way that escape is not possible (checkmate), the game is over! Therefore, it is usually tucked away early in the game as the other pieces around it launch into battle. In fact, the monarch usually doesn't enter the fray until the majority of the pieces have already left the board, as that is when it is safest.

Let's be honest, though- where's the fun in that? A daring King who walks straight into the heart of the battle, regardless of the danger, is much more likely to be remembered than a feeble sovereign who spends its days posted on the first rank for eternity.

That is why this article will be a celebration of the few gems that feature a dazzling journey from the home of the castled position to the eye of the storm. Let's venture into the world of crazy King walks!

GAME 1: NIGEL SHORT - JAN TIMMAN 1991

Perhaps the most famous King walk game of all, Short demonstrates the conditions necessary for a King walk and executes it to great effect...

Does this game makes Nigel Short the King of King walks? That's for you to decide!

GAME 2: AMOS POKORNY - KAREL HROMADKA 1926

In this old game, Queens are exchanged are as early as move 6 and the King begins its march just 6 moves later...

GAME 3: VASSILY IVANCHUK - ETIENNE BACROT 2007

This next game was suggested to me by @simaginfan . As he said, it's from 'planet Chucky'! Wherever it's from, it's certainly out of this world...

GAME 4: JOOST VAN RUITENBURG - SANDRO CASTELLANI 2000

The final game of today's post is perhaps the craziest of all. You'll realize why when you see the final position...

None of these games are perfectly accurate but that's what makes them so fun. The fact that the players had the chance to venture into the unknown with their most valuable piece and then chose to seize that chance, to any audience's delight, is truly satisfying. I hope this small collection of King walks has been enjoyable to you.

As always, leave your thoughts on the games and the post as a whole. Perhaps you may even be able to share some crazy King walks that you know about. Until next time, take care.
