Chess originated in 6th-century India as chaturanga, a military strategy game representing infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. It spread to Persia (shatranj), then the Islamic world and Europe, where it evolved into the modern game by 1500, with faster rules for the queen and bishop.

Origins and Evolution

6th Century India (Chaturanga): Considered the earliest ancestor, featuring four divisions (infantry, cavalry, elephants, chariots).
7th Century Persia (Shatranj): Adopted by the Sassanid Persian empire, where it gained terminology like "checkmate" from sharmot (the king is helpless).
Spread to Europe: Following the Islamic conquest of Persia, the game spread to Europe via Spain and Italy by the 10th century

15th Century Reforms: The game evolved into "Mad Queen Chess" in Spain/Italy, increasing the power of the queen and bishop to create the modern game.
