Back rank mate

A simple type of checkmate, whereby the mated King is trapped on the first rank behind his own pawns and is unable escape an attack from Queen or Rook. This pattern appears often in games and was a favorite tactic of World Champion Bobby Fischer. By exploiting the back rank, you will be able to use tactics you didn't think possible, all owing to the threat of checkmate.
