Duras, Oldrich

Oldrich Duras (1882-1957) was a Czech champion (1905, 1907, and 1909) and grandmaster (1950) who was one of the world’s top 10 players from 1906 to 1914.  In 1912, he tied for first in the German championship.  During World War I he served in the Austrio-Hungarian army.  He gave up chess in 1918 to pursue his career as a civil servant in the Czechoslovakian Ministry of Defense.  From 1922 to 1931, he edited a chess column in the newspaper Cesko Slovo
