Fairhurst, William Albert

William Albert Fairhurst (1903-1982) was editor of the Chess Amateur.  He was Scottish Champion 11 times between 1932 and 1962 (1932, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1962).  He was British Champion in 1937 and Commonwealth Champion in 1951.  He was awarded the International Master title in 1951.  He moved to New Zealand in 1970.  He played for Scotland and New Zealand in the chess Olympiads.  He was an eminent civil engineer (PhD in Civil Engineering) and bridge designer.
