Furman, Semyen

Semyon Abramovich Furman (1920-1978) was a Soviet Grandmaster (1966) and coach who was Karpov’s chief trainer since 1969.  He played in 13 USSR Championships.  He was 3rd in 1948.  He won the Leningrad Championship in 1953, 1954, and 1957.  He was awarded the International Master title in 1954.  In 1966, he became a Grandmaster at the age of 46.  He died of a heart attack three months before Karpov’s world championship match with Korchnoi in 1978.  He was 57.  He learned chess when he was 15.
