Geller, Efim

Efim Petrovich Geller (1925-1998) was one of the top 10 players in the world for over 20 years.  He won the Ukrainian Championship in 1950, 1957, 1958, and 1959.  He was a six-time Candidate between 1953 and 1971 (1953, 1956, 1962, 1965, 1968, and 1971).  He became an International Master in 1951 and a Grandmaster in 1952.  He played in the USSR championship 23 times, from 1949 to 1985.  He won the USSR championship in 1955.  24 years later he won it again in 1979 (47th USSR Championship) at the age of 54 making him the oldest Soviet chess champion.  In 1991, he shared 1st place (with Smyslov) in the World Seniors' Championship, and won it in 1992.  He earned a PhD in Physical Education.
