Gufeld, Eduard

Eduard Gufeld (1936-2002) was a Ukrainian Grandmaster (1967), chess coach and trainer, who played in 8 USSR championships from 1959 to 1972.  He played in his first chess tournament in 1953 at the age of 17.  In 1960 he won the championship of the USSR Armed Forces.  He was awarded the International Master titlein 1954 and the Grandmaster title in 1967.  He guided Maya Chiburdanidze to the women’s world championship.  He moved to Hollywood in 1995 and opened up a chess club in 1998.  He won the American Open in 1999.   He authored over 80 books on chess.    He died of a stroke.
