The earliest of the Scottish chess clubs is the Edinburgh Chess Club, founded in 1822. Other chess clubs were the Glasglow Chess Club in 1840, the Dundee Chess Club in 1847, the Glasgow Central Chess Club in 1860, and the Falkirk Chess Club in 1863. The Scottish Chess Assoication was formed in 1884. The Scottish Championship began in 1884. The Scottish Championship is the longest continual national event in the world.
