Sicilian Defence, Taimanov Variation
The Taimanov Variation of the Sicilian Defence arises after the moves 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cd4 4 Nd4 Nc6.An equivalent move order is 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cd4 4 Nd4 e6. The move order with 2...e6 is regarded as the standard move order because the Taimanov has similar themes to the Kan Variation. The Kan-Taimanov family of Sicilian Variations is also referred to as Paulsen.

The Taimanov V. is flexible and often transposes to other Sicilian variations such as the Scheveningen. There is a transposition to the Sveshnikov which goes 5 Nc3 Nf6 6 Ndb5 d6 7 Bf4 e5 8 Bg5 a6 9 Na3 b5.
