Recently it was the 70th birthday of Kevin Whately. Whilst he has accrued 54 screen credits in his acting career, he started with numerous small appearances in many productions as all actors do, and since then has been the man for long-running series fame. He was first notable playing a detective in a Miss Marple miniseries with Joan Hickson in 1985, then Peak Practice 1993-95 before Auf Wiedersehen Pet as Neville Hope 1983-2004 led to the role for which he hit national fame as Detective Sergeant Robbie Lewis and foil to John Thaw in Inspector Morse 1987-2000. Such was his and the series popularity that on the passing of Thaw, a new series was created on the same premise with him as the lead – Lewis – with him partnering Laurence Fox, which ran for nine seasons 2006-15, both of the series being set in and around Oxford and the University. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he grew up in Humshaugh nr Collerford/Hexham in Northumberland; educated Barnard Castle School, Barnard Castle, County Durham; studied accounting/finance at Newcastle Polytechnic; attended Central School of Speech and Drama, Swiss Cottage, North London, before learning his craft in Rep in Perth, Scotland; now has a doctorate from Newcastle University & is President of the People’s Theatre in Newcastle. He lives in Woburn Sands, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire with his wife & two children; supports Newcastle FC and has always been a keen cricketer and wanted to play for England; is also a rock music fan and plays guitar – great fan of Pink Floyd and Dire Straits. We believe he is worthy of a match in his honour and hope you accept the challenge. If the number or ratings do not suit, then please make contact.
