Long ago we missed the 45th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which is recognised by the American Film Institute as one if its top 100 films culturally and aesthetically. Originally the film rights were bought by Kirk Douglas, who played the lead role on stage, but eventually the film was made by son Michael. Apart from being Obama’s favourite film it was commercially and critically successful, winning five Oscars 1976 – Best Film, Best Actor Jack Nicholson, Best Actress Louise Fletcher, Best Director Milos Forman, Best Adapted Screenplay Lawrence Hauben & Bo Goldman, also internationally, winning six BAFTAS, including the aforementioned first four plus Best Supporting Actor Brad Dourif & Best Editing. Also starred Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Scatman Crothers & Will Sampson as Chief Bromden of the Celilo tribe in North Oregon. The plot revolves around a criminal guilty of a serious crime pleading insanity, so is sent to a mental health institution where he ferments mutiny amongst the other inmates to the system and practices. He encourages the playing of games so the inmates can watch the World Series on TV (recording of Game 2 of 1963 World Series – NY Yankees/LA Dodgers); they also play Monopoly and basketball and he teaches them blackjack. Though the actual institution in the film was not named, it was filmed at the Oregon State Hospital in Pendleton, with some of the extras actual inmates; also on location at Depoe Bay and Salem, Oregon, also Fort Bragg, California. The movie was the inspiration for the song Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica on their third studio album Master of Puppets. We believe this to be worthy of a match in its honour and hope you accept – if the number or ratings do not suit, then please make contact.
