A chess opening revolves around control of the centre four squares. The two ways of control are direct and indirect. Direct control means placing pawns on e4/d4 and then defending that space. Indirect control allows your opponent to occupy the centre while you snipe at it from the edges, usually by fianchettoing one or both Bishops.
