In chaturaji games sometimes players will sacrifice their pawns or peices in-order increase their chances of winning. Sometimes they even combine this with softteaming from other players to have effects on the game.
As with normal chess the moves after a sacrifice must be calculated well in advance. But there is a second element with 4pc, the use of emotional intelligence to understand how other players will react.
A warning for this tatic:
Sacrifices in chaturaji have a greater impact than any other tatic in the game so if someone does a bad sacrifice it can ruin the game for everyone. This tatic is best avoided unless you can use calculation and emotional intelligence to do it effectively.
There are various types of sacs:
Single pawun sacs:
This is where a player will push a pawn as bait for another player to capture. This can sometimes can be combined with softteaming to collapse the position of the players to your right or above. However bear in mind you are now a pawn down, 5 points less for the endgame, so there is a tradeoff
Knights sacs
These are the most common sac and also the most deadly. Knights move in unpredictable ways and is the best peice to take advantage of a check. Lets say red is in check by blue. Yellow and green can now bring their knight in to attack and red cant do anything about it. Even if they foolishly take the knight and lose, there is enough compensation for that players knight. There is also one more plan with the knight is to sac for two pawns. Is that bad? Not at all because that player loses 10 points worth of material in the endgame if those pawns were to promote.
Bishop sacs
Rare. Sometimes you see a knight on a outpost and trade with it, inorder to damange a player pawn structure. Sometimes you can sac a bishop to mate players but this scewed your own chances since you can't get those points back in compensation. The best chance is to keep a open diagonal and if someone is in check, you can attack. But be aware that player might take the bishop!
Rook sac
Rare, usually in desperate situations when you are down points, a rook to bishop exchange sac is worth it. Rooks should not be used with softeaming tatics, since most players will take that rook and sac their own king or peice, effectively scewing your own winning chances.
King sac
The most fun tatic in chaturaji! Since the king has to be taken you can effectively eat anything with the king if you have enough points! The king is worth 3 so if you are 4 points ahead a king sac is possible if there are two players in the game. With three it is more complicated. One player must be 4 points down, so when you sac to the other, they have enough points to autoclave. Also the player who is down must not be able to sac a peice, if they do they can get their points to match yours or higher, effectively making the king sac useless. With 4 players king sacs you would need at least 30 points to take the win, so these occur usually to gain second or third. Sometimes it is better to wait until the player count reduces to 3.
