I found this book tonight at a rummage, by a Mr. Raymond Smullyan. Anybody heard of him? I'm very happy to have discovered him and will be purchasing more of his books (see his The Chess Mysteries of the Arabian Nights)!

First of all Yusupov INSISTS that you play each diagram with all variations on the chessboard. It takes so long to set up each diagram on the chessboard. Yet I can't do it all in my head and he is adamant about going through each on the chessboard.
Secondly,in playing the exercises, I have no clue which side I am on.
Has anyone gone through this book? Stwils.

I found it really interesting that in Rabelais' Gargantua and Pangagruel (1st published around 1532), within the 5th Book of Pantagruel, there are a couple of chapters on a Chess Dance. In one chapter the moves of the pieces are explained, in another a couple of games are gone through. One begins with a Queen's Pawn Opening.
If you like naughtiness, theology, philosophy, medicine, wine, scatological humor, and/or tripe on the Twelfth Night, check him out!

Hey,
I have the old version of this book. It is a great book. He writes in an engaging style and explains himself well. If he didn't the book would've been usless to me. When I read it it was pretty much over my head by a lot. I had just gotten to understand some basic pawn endings, and some basic rook endings, an I read 1 ancient middle game book (Znosko-Borovsky's). Suba's book basically flipped upside down everything I thought about chess. I didn't get what he was doing but I was able to deal with opponents that played like him (if you count kids in college in informal games, whereas he's a GM) much better. My chess definately improved after reading the book.
Anyway, he has an updated version of it. Has anyone compared the new one to the old one?
