Alekhine - Euwe, Amsterdam, 1921

There was a publicity video about this match where a close-up of the pieces was seen. Euwe, playing the Black side, ventured the Budapest Gambit. Since I could not see evidence of that line being played in any game in the WC (1935 or 1937), I searched the gamescore in the database and found it was played in 1921. That's almost fifteen years before the match that made Euwe a world champion. I'll provide few images. Does anyone know more about the set seen in the pictures?

The set looks beautiful! It looks like a typical Staunton set with a Russian knights and bishops.

I have books on both matches but I couldn't find anything on what sets were used.

Yes, I did a search too. The game was some sort of publicity event. It was played on October 10, 1921 at Amsterdam. It is the only game they played with the Budapest Gambit.

Someone on Facebook's Staunton Sets Vintage and New suggested that the set was an oversized Lardy with the beads in the eyes of the knight but another person said Lardy sets were not made at that time. So it's a stalemate on the name of the set at this time.

I've added a close-up of the pieces.

With that close up photo, it somewhat looks like a glass-eyed Lardy.

Can you get a modern picture of a glass-eyed Lardy and post it here? I'd like to see it.

Suddenly I remember reading about one of the Karpov-korchnoi matches. I believe it was the one in Baguio/Philippines. When all issues were finally settled after both parties had been really demanding. Everyone agreed to the conditions and players were ready to come to the board and play. And then it appeared the organisation had forgotten about the equipment: there were no board and pieces and someone had to scramble to get some half-decent set on the table.

That glass-eyed Lardy set is very close if it is not the set in the film picture. The K and B  and Q don't have exactly the same shape but that N is a bit more convincing -- except for the dip at the back of it's neck in the modern photo. The collars are less pronounced in the old set as well.

Overall, I'd say it's close but not the same set.

The footing is the same for pawns and pieces so I don't think it was a mixed set.

I was just looking through TheChessEmpire on Etsy and saw New Hasting Series staunton chess Pieces Boxwood & Ebony 4.25" king. It looks nearly identical to the "Alekhine set" of 1921. However, the knights are not flared at the base like the 'Alekhine set' and the ears are not perked up either. Come to think of it, the collars are not quite the same either.

The Staunton Zukertorte 1875-1880 set is also very close but the same issues arise as with the set above.

Alas, the puzzle continues.

Yeah I agree! The knights are close. The rest of the pieces somewhat match.

The Hastings set definitely looks a lot closer as a whole than the Lardy.
