Game with Ani

Ani this is the position we reached.  I can't find a way for us to continue the game from this position but we can do it in this thread using the position embed tool.

White clearly has a huge material advantage - but I am not sure how easy this will be to turn into a mate.

so we can't move the pieces? Where do I type my move then? Here?

mattchess

Yes - or you can use the board embed tool (looks like a little board on the left of the reply toolbar)

Although if you are OK with it I would be happy to run it through an engine competition to see if Houdini and Stockfish could work it out without drawing.  I could have them do 10 matches and let it run overnight and then post the results.

I prefer to play it out. It will be good practice for both of us. This is a technical win for white but not so easy. But if you decide to resign and run it through engine then I am fine with it.

mattchess

With no pawns on the board it is technically a draw, so the question is if the pawns allow white to find a mate.  It is a really interesting position.  After we play over this I'll look forward to going over the whole game.

I switched to using a pgn, so now you can copy the pgn and insert it easily with your next move.  I should be around today if you want to continue together on an analysis board

This is confusing...I don't know all the features here in chess.com. Can we just play out the game on ICC?

Update - Ani and I played through it a bit tonight at the meetup at uptown espresso.  Consensus seems to be that it is a draw if both sides play correctly.  I am going to set engines running in a tournament starting from this opening and we will see if they ever find a win.  I'll post the results and then may turn it into a submission for analysis by an IM here.

Well interesting results!  At 20 minute time controls, from our initial position at the start of this thread, it is a clear win for white.  What I think is interesting is that in all the wins, white's first move is a knight move whereas in the single draw white moved the king first.  I am going to run another tournament after our first two moves posted above (2...Kf6, 2 Kf3) and see if we get more draws after that.  Below is the cross table and each of the games PGN to review.

The other thing I found interesting is that black is losing because it is moving its bishop away from protecting the black pawn...at first glance it is not clear to me why it is doing that...will need to review these games.  But the key for white seems to be (1) get black's bishop to stop protecting its pawn and take the pawn and (2) get white's knight positioned properly so that when white pushes the pawn and black is forced to re-take with the bishop that can be re-captured by the knight and move into a knight and bishop versus king endgame...or white may queen.

Seems I can only post one game per post so I will post each individually...
