Is Blitz Harmful to Serious Chess Improvement?
Blitz only becomes a problem if you don't use it correctly. On the other hand, there are also people who play classical regularly and don't improve for years.
I don't regret playing blitz sure mistakes will happen, but is that wrong? My goal is to play enjoyable chess games. My goal isn't ranking as I'm aware I cannot beat Magnus, thus I play what I enjoy. And I do notice 5 and 3 minute games do improve quick board analyzing skills.
Also those games are nice to quickly repetitively memorize and train opening moves. Also you can train tactical awareness since you cannot play much ahead you have to learn to play more positional, learn what might be better for later in the game (pawn structure) knights in centre, or play a opponent move blocking style. Thinking ahead safe moves.Al
"A common piece of chess advice that I disagree with is not to play blitz... just understand it's not the same as classical." - Andrew Tang
There are several reasons why playing blitz chess can actually be beneficial for improving one's chess skills. First, blitz chess is a great way to improve one's speed and accuracy in making moves. When playing under time pressure, players are forced to make quick decisions and calculate variations more efficiently. This can help players develop their intuition and pattern recognition skills, which can be applied to slower-paced games as well.
Blitz chess can help players improve their mental endurance and concentration. When playing a long chess game, it can be challenging to maintain focus for hours on end. However, playing blitz chess trains players to stay focused and alert even under high-pressure situations, which can also help in longer games.
Blitz chess can be a fun and enjoyable way to practice and improve one's chess skills. It can be a great way to challenge oneself and try out new openings or strategies without the fear of losing rating points or affecting one's overall tournament standings.
Of course, it is important to balance playing blitz chess with slower-paced games and study of chess theory and strategy. But overall, playing blitz chess can be a useful tool for improving one's chess skills and enjoying the game in a more relaxed and fast-paced environment.
