Online board and pieces

I know this isn't the real physical stuff, but we spend so much time playing and analysing online these days that the online board and pieces we choose are an important consideration.  For me, I prefer the look of the "book" pieces, perhaps because they bring back many fond memories of looking at games and positions from books when I was a child (before the internet age).  The other choice is the board, and for me I like "walnut", as it looks to me like a natural board you see in major tournaments, or even at the world championship match.  To totally nerd out, I prefer the "coordinates" to be outside the board but am toying with the idea of turning them off as I rarely look at them.

Interested to hear what others choose and their reasons why.

Yeah it makes a difference when you get a good combination of online board and pieces. Some bad combinations can make everything look very foggy.

Much to my chagrin I am finding out that I see much more (tactics etc.) on the screen than with real board and pieces on the table. When I play an online game with a nice chess set on the table (my son moves the opposite side) it seems I overlook more than usual. That gives me great pain...

I have the same experience.  I'm playing so much online now that when I show up to the club once a week for a game, I find it harder playing over the board.

The above combo of uscf/book pieces is very nice. I use Lucas Chess and HIARCS but I can no longer find my favourite "cases" chess pieces. I have the cases font installed but don't know how to get it into either program 😢. Without that the above or Merida/Fritz type are probably my next choice.

Is anyone a fan of the default board and pieces on Chess.com?  I couldn't change the settings quick enough, lol.

Hello all. For some reason ill always go back to a green board it seems i see more tactics also i think your right about playing online a lot as when i play club chess it seems it takes a bit of adjusting to get use to. Cheers.

I like to stick with basic green and off-white board and black and white pieces.

Now I've gone back to the "classic" style of pieces - for some reason I prefer that now.

I think most of the online videos and analysis that I have been watching use the classic style of pieces so it looks appealing to use the same style when I play.  I may go back to the "book" pieces in the future, as I still see that in some of the books that I use for study.
