what should a 1400 player focus on to get better?

hi, i am around a 1400 rating for some time, and have problems getting above 1420,

i dont really know what to focus on, i play pretty much every day a little bit and was wondering how to get better, is it just playing and practicing?, i never really learned openings is that necessary? feels so dry i cant do it,
i play tactics here on chess.com and spent alot of time analysing positions there.

it also helped me alot getting from 1200 to 1400, going through my games that ive lost and having the computer look at it to see whre i went wrong

also it feels that im not often in a mental state where i can focus all of my energy on the game im playing, usually something else in my life is interferring and distracting, and if its only a fleeting thought, it can get you out of the "flow" of a game easily, might be the main reason why im not improving, is my mental unstability happy.png

how did you guys get better, what did you do to improve your game, any tips for youtube teachers or something?

I watch john bartholomew occasionally and the saint louis chess club chanel, do you guys have other sources?

I don't play on any rated system much, so I can't reliably give my rating, but I'd guess at something like 1200-1800 (rather big range :/)

A pity no one else has answered... I can't help much and am sort of in the same position, but if you want to try learning openings, YouTube has plenty of that with pretty good analysis (as far as I can tell)

I have the same view on learning openings, it really does "feel so dry" happy.png. Personally, I have relied on experience, but I have watched opening videos just to see some interesting openings

thx!

right, i also learn just by experience but cant getmuch higher then 1430, what helped me alot is thinking more about positional advantages and having a good position in general.
also tal baron a stream thought me to always ask questions before making amove, like
is there a check mate or mate threat?
is one of my pieces under threat?
does the opponent have undefended piece i can take
which pieces are undefended on my side
whcih piece does the least/has the worst positon -->then improve that piece

also someone hinted thats i best to stick with a opening that you prefer and know well, for example i always play d4 as white. so i can improve on the queens gambit lines or kings indian, slav defense or whatever.

so these tipps i can give you that might help
