One of the members of our club has asked a question about the age of Ayesha (ra) when she was married to the Prophet of Islam (صل الله علیه و آله و سلم).

This is his question:  "Why did Prophet Muhammed marry a 6 year old?"

The claim that Ayesha was six or nine at the time of marriage is based on several hadiths found in some Islamic hadith books and various historical sources.

In this forum, inshallah, we will examine if such hadiths are true or if they are false.

The idea that Ayesha (ra) was six or nine years old at the time of marriage to the Prophet of Islam is disputed among Islamic historians and scholars.

Even though there are multiple hadiths and narrations stating that Ayesha was six or nine, and even though some of those hadiths are ranked as "Sahih" or "genuine" by many Muslim scholars, still there are other scholars and historians who disagree with the truthfulness of those hadiths.  According to the latter group of scholars there are strong evidence and clear historical hadiths or narrations that contradict the claim that Ayesha was six or nine years old when she married the Prophet.  According to them,  Ayesha's true age of marriage was something between 13 to 19 years old.  We are going to look at some of those arguments which show that Ayesha's age could not have been six or nine at the time of her marriage.

Below is the link to an article which offers twelve different historical and narrative arguments as to why the hadith about Ayesha's early age of marriage at six or nine is false:

According to the above article, even thought there are "sahih" hadith in Bukhari and Muslim books that specify Ayesha's age of marriage to be six or nine, still there are other "sahih" hadith in Bukhari and Muslim books that contradict Ayesha's early age of marriage.  In other words, we have several so called "sahih" hadiths in the same books that are contradicting each other.
