About Me:

I have been a chess teacher for over 15 years.  I was employed as a trainer for the Chess Emporium located in Phoenix, AZ for 3 years while completing my education.

I specialize in teaching students rated between 1200-1800 (regardless of age), emphasizing strong positional foundations.

I particularly enjoy helping an individual build their opening repertoire, but I can also facilitate growth in EVERY aspect of the game.  Needless to say, my focus as a coach will depend on your personal needs.

As a scholastic player/young adult I trained with GM Kaidanov and GM Wojtkiewicz and have also had the pleasure of working with GM Yermolinsky and IM Daniel Fernandez. I have many chess accomplishments. Among my best results were:

-1st Place K-12 section of the 1997 Pan-American Intercollegiate championships

-6th Place 1998 National High School Championships (JV section)

-2nd place in the 1999 All-America Cup blitz tournament

-Multiple state championships (KY) 1997-2000

-Most recently, 1st place in the 2011 US Amateur West blitz tournament.

English is my native and primary language.  I have very flexible hourly rates and my rates are negotiable for younger players.

Feel free to contact me with any questions :)

    Mr. Stapczynski

Hello there! My name is Michael Ridge I reside here in Tucson, Az. right next door basicly. I'm 28 years old and I want to take my chess game to the next level. I've never played chess at all in my life until recently. I've been playing on a daily basis now for about a year now. There is a chess club here in town I have attended just a couple of times, but i dont even match up at all, even the youngsters out think me. I understand the basics of chess and the rules, but i just don't quite match up. In which I understand, I just started, and I know i wont be a challenge for quite some time maybe even years down the road. I know It takes Time, Patience, Determination, Practice!! So for some odd reason Chess is something i would love to be great at. But I need a coach. I need Discipline. This is why you find me here today writing you.. So what say you?

    Michael Ridge
