Early leader Alexander Morozevich lost his first game in the fifth round of the Tashkent Grand Prix against Ruslan Ponomariov.

That result allowed four players, including Ponomariov, to catch Morozevich on a score of 3/5 at the top of the standings.

There were two other decisive games in round five - both wins for the black pieces. Rustam Kasimdzhanov defeated Wang Hao, and Gata Kamsky ended his nightmare start to the event by scoring a win against Boris Gelfand.
