What got me so interested in chess when in my teens I first learned the moves from my younger brother, was how a piece/s could defeat the opponent's piece/s of equal or greater or lesser value by what I much later learned as tactics. Winning materials back then was the name of the game and checkmate (or even stalemate) was just a result of having overwhelming material advantage.
