Long ago we missed the 15th anniversary of the passing of Vincent Schiavelli, who for our purpose was Dr Kaufman in Tomorrow Never Dies 1993. Albeit his ancestors were from Sicily, Italy he was born in Brookyln and educated there at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and it was indeed in New York where his love of and success at acting grew. Described by a critic as an “instantly recognisable sad-faced actor” this was due to his diagnosis in childhood as suffering from Marfan Syndrome, a cause he championed as he became successful and he was a success on stage, TV and film, amassing 162 screen credits. During his youth he also grew up with his grandfather who was the cook for an Italian baron and he studied at NYU School of the Arts. He will be remembered for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 1975, lots of TV, Fast Times at Ridgemont High 1982 and the follow-on TV series 1986 as the same Mr Vargas, Amadeus 1984, Ghost 1990, Batman Returns 1992 & voice work on the Batman animated series 1993, also the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1998. In later life he was the author of three cookbooks and wrote regularly on food for magazines and newspapers, receiving a journalism award. He also in later years returned to Sicily and directed plays and did many talk shows there, passing away at the early age of 57 in Polizzi Generosa.
