3rd Annual St. Louis Metro Class Championships

This weekend I went to the Scholastic Center and Chess Club of St Louis to observe its 3rd Annual Metro St. Louis Class Championships - and of course, to check out this highly-regarded club. See photos here:

This $1 million facility opened in July 2008. It is the only one in the country to have a full-time GM on staff (Ben Finegold) giving weekly lectures and lessons. Nakamura provides lectures quarterly. It boasts more than 500 members.

I asked John Strand, Assistant Director of the club, if Magnus Carlsen has ever stopped in. He laughed and said, " No but we're trying to organize a big international tournament for 2012."
"This fall we're having a Battle of the Sexes event," he said.
This will be a 5 woman vs 5 man events - all masters including WGMs Judit Polgar and Jennifer Shahade
The club has hosted the National Championships for the past two years with another one set for April. At the same time it will be hosting the Women's Championship instead of as a separate event.
Now here are a few of the games from the event. They were 90 minute games.
In this first one, white, the highest rated player going in, suffered huge time losses and come mid-game, he was down an hour! For his final 10 - 15 moves, he was operating on about a minute or less, while his opponent still had an hour on his clock.
Josh Frank won the Expert Class and $200

In game 1: would move 19 ...c4 & then Bc5 have been better for Black?

It is against site policy to insult. Be careful calling Judit Polgar names.

I meant it to be funny. Titles are GM, IM, WGM then WIM.

Judit Polgar is a female GM not a Woman Grand Master. To top it off she boycotts all-Woman events.

That facility is first-class and I was disappointed I couldn't make the event. That Class E title had my name on it :)
