Who is the best person to beat Magnus Carlsen?
I bet Wesley will top Carlsen in 2018.
I haven't read through this whole thread, but Magnus is the only one who can beat Magnus...and the opponent has to know how to drive Magnus crazy with frustration.
Sergey almost pulled it off, but then he gave it back with a stupid loss.
Mamedyarov is clearly a threat; having just broken the 2800 elo, this strong GM's strength is in the complex and highly tactical positions. His improved opening and endgame play has him surged 29 rating points! His next meeting with Magnus will be watched with utmost excitement from Chess fans.
I think your asking the wrong question. Its not about who can beat him. But its more about who he will let beat him. Because when I look at Magnus now vs 3 years ago he is playing alot more imaginitive. He no longer cares about being solid etc. What he wants is to make his mark in history as a pioneer. For this reason he is definitely vulnerable to lose his title, but not because someone would be better than him. Only because he does not care about it as much as he cares about evolving into what Steinitz became in the later 1800s. There is a whole new wave of players coming and Carlsen wants to greet them as not just the best, but as the first to change the way the game will be played in the future.
Maybe I am just a crazy old git...

Kasparov considers Wesley as the number 1 threat to Carlsen.
I totally agree. GM So will beat Carlsen, I predict a crush by Wesley!
1. Indeed, you are not Manguts
2. Your answer is wrong
3. Stockfish is not a person
1. It is correct
2. It is Magnus not Manguts
Magnus is freaking brilliant. When people started listing him next to Fischer and Kasparov as one of the all time greatest, I was like, what?
So I started reading about him, and watched a couple of videos about him. Oh myyyy Gooooodness! Magnus is THE real deal.
And for Sergey Karjakin to take him to Rapid TieBreaks last year..., a huge tip of the hat to Sergey. That's how strong Sergey is. And he's like #8 in the World or something.
In about 3-4 years from now, I'm thinking Wei Yi of China. Later than that, 11-year old Praggu from India. These guys are Monsters.
For the women, I like Hou YiFan and Carissa Yip.
And for the young American Chess prodigies, I hear about Awonder Liang. The little one just likes to go over Grandmaster games by himself, and teaches himself. Scary good player.
I don't think there's any contender at the moment who has the consistent play to beat Carlsen but I wouldn't be surprised if within a few years someone eventually does.
I'd bet on Wesley So. He's the no.1 threat to Magnus (he is growing up fast, and if he's not better already, he'll be in the near future). Another upcoming serious threat is Mamedyarov.
I think someone like Wei Yi is a good choice for the feature. I dont think anyone will topple him just yet for the next few years. It will be up to one of the youngsters to come up and show their stuff
