Nakamura is currently registered as a NY player.

Why is Yu Yangyi registered as a Californian player?

Martin_Stahl

Who knows. Maybe staying there for a little bit? Or maybe attended an event and the TD gave a local address when paying for the membership.

Var Akobian and Sam Shankland

Larry Christianson and Jack Peters ! Don't forget Walter Browne. Igor Ivanov held his own.

Larry Christiansen lives in Boston (although he's from California), and Walter Browne is dead.

Nothing was mentioned by the OP past or present. . Igor Ivanov has also passed. The players I mentioned were long time residents in Cali, fixtures in American chess lore.

Other California players of note were:

Kamran Shirazi; Nick de Firmian

James Tarjan; John Grefe

Well, the question is "who is" and not were.

Ahhh... present tense. Who today compares to the previous Calif. Champs ? Elite players seem to have mostly all left. Maybe that's why the OP asked.  No familiar names. I saw 1 or 2 mentioned. So I threw in the old days of Calif glory when the names were known by most. Sorry if it was off topic.

Here is a link to the history of chess from 1854 in California.

I'm sure Sam Shankland and Var Akobian today are at least as good as Walter Browne ever was, and definitely better than Peters/Christiansen. Remember that there are three reasons, no more no less, that neither Shankland nor Akobian has ever won (or will ever win, probably) a US Championship, and those are Nakamura, So, and Caruana.
