I think there are National Archives and online databases for this sort of thing to help in tracking down US veterans and their families. Every once in a while I hear a story on the news about someone finding a soldier's Purple Heart award due to circumstances and returning it to the family. Hopefully with a little bit of sleuthing, the chess wallet will get reunited with the family. It'll make a great story and memory.
